Internship · Unpaid Academic Placement

Fire Protection Intern

FSI-TFP is seeking motivated students from Seneca Polytechnic and Humber Polytechnic — specifically enrolled in Seneca's Fire Protection Engineering Technology (FPT) program or Humber's Fire Services diploma — for an academic placement. This unpaid placement provides first-hand industry experience in fire protection, life safety, and field operations, and helps students complete required field hours where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with fire protection field inspections and site visits
  • Observe and support installation, testing, and maintenance activities
  • Help document field observations, service notes, and basic reports
  • Learn and follow safety procedures and workplace protocols
  • Support technicians and supervisors with general field tasks as assigned
  • Gain exposure to fire alarm, sprinkler, suppression, and life safety systems
  • Assist with quotations and reporting

Learning Outcomes

  • Hands-on understanding of fire protection industry operations
  • Exposure to field-based work in a supervised setting
  • Practical experience that supports academic learning and required field hours
  • Improved familiarity with workplace safety, communication, and professional conduct

Ideal Candidate

  • Currently enrolled in a fire protection-related program at Seneca or Humber Polytechnic
  • Interested in field experience and industry exposure
  • Reliable, professional, and willing to learn
  • Able to follow instructions and work safely in active jobsite environments
  • Comfortable with physical activity and occasional travel to job sites

Placement Details

  • Unpaid student placement, with opportunity for honorarium and/or permanent placement upon graduation from an accredited program at Seneca or Humber Polytechnic
  • Schedule: flexible, based on academic requirements and availability
  • Location: Toronto/GTA and surrounding areas, if applicable
  • Duration: to be determined in coordination with the student and school requirements

Fire Protection Graduate Trainee

Toronto GTA · Hybrid · $25–$40/hr

FSI-TFP is seeking a motivated recent graduate of Humber Polytechnic or Seneca Polytechnic to join our team as a Fire Protection Graduate Trainee. This paid, entry-level position is built for a new graduate starting a career in fire protection — with hands-on experience in field operations, inspections, and system support from day one.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with fire protection inspections, service calls, and site visits
  • Support the installation, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems
  • Learn to read and interpret technical documents, drawings, and reports
  • Help prepare field notes, service records, and inspection documentation
  • Work alongside experienced technicians and supervisors in a professional setting
  • Follow all safety procedures and company standards
  • Assist with quotations, reporting, and customer engagement

Qualifications

  • Recent graduate of Humber Polytechnic or Seneca Polytechnic in a fire protection, fire services, or related program
  • Strong interest in building a career in the fire protection industry
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in the field and adapt to changing jobsite conditions
  • Valid driver's license an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
